Jenison Invitational

Girls who played in the Jenison Tournament,

Thanks for the work you put in today.  All the returning players are noticeably better than you were a year ago at this time.  Your strokes are better, and more importantly, you are playing more intelligent tennis.  One of the coolest parts of my job is seeing how quickly the people who work hard improve.  To the first-year players who played today, think about how impressive it is that you are already among the top players!

With that in mind, we do have another tournament next weekend, and my expectations are unchanged.  I expect us to play dominating tennis at all 6 flights.  I expect us to establish ourselves as the best JV team in the toughest Conference in West Michigan.  Today, our efforts earned us 2nd place, which means we have one week to improve enough to get to the top.

Here is what I expect out of you:
1.  Think about 2 VERY SPECIFIC things you are going to do differently next Saturday. (For example, let's say want to be more aggressive, be specific about exactly when and how you are going to do it.)
2.  POST WHAT THOSE 2 THINGS ARE BY MAKING A COMMENT IN THIS BLOG. This will allow Coach Matt to know how to help you this week.  Also, I want to know so I can look for the new EVEN-AWESOMER you next week!!!
3.  Use the matches this week to practice your new ideas.
4.  When next weekend rolls around, be ready to dominate:)

Good luck with all your matches next week, and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

I am going to attack the net more and when I am at the net I am going to attack the other net girl with high shots and low shots away from her. I am going to try to avoid swining my racket at the net, and move my feet more

I love it. I put together a tab for you called "how to attack the net" under the Girls JV section. Check it out. It will give you a good visual of how you can do some of those things.

Thanks Jay!

I want to put more energy into my playing, like moving my feet more, and not getting discouraged before the game is over.

I like that a lot. A good way to keep your energy high is to give it to others.

Sounds silly, but they say the best way to GET a friend is to BE a friend. Same works with energy. I've found that the players that GET the most energized on a court have been players who GIVE the most energy to others during a match.

Compliment your partner and make them smile. When you are in between points and games, shout out something fun to one of our players on another court. If you do this, you'll realize all of a sudden that you have more energy than you've ever had!!!

Once you get energized, it's so much easier to run up to the net and attack your opponent!!! When you watch the clips I posted with Sammie and Courtney, it's pretty obvious just by looking at their body language that they are pumped up and ready to go ALL THE TIME!!!

I want to improve my footwork and have more energy. Also be more agressive at the net!

That would be awesome! If you want better footwork, think about developing a habit of bouncing around on your toes right before every single point starts. If you do this, it almost always continues once the point starts. Kelly Hayes stuck out Saturday as someone who is particularly good at this. If you get a chance this week, watch her when she is playing a match right before ever point starts. Then, try to do the same thing yourself when you play.
