https://www.hollandsentinel.com/sports/20190828/high-school-boys-tennis-team-previews I am excited to announce that the Men's Varsity Tennis Team will be getting a new assistant coach this fall! West Ottawa Alumni Mark VanderStoep will be assisting with the Men's Program going forward. Coach VanderStoep will be a FANTASTIC addition to our coaching staff. As a player for West Ottawa, Mark still holds single season wins records at multiple flights (in singles) and longest win streak records at multiple flights (in both singles & doubles).
After graduating from WO, Coach VanderStoep went on to have a VERY successful career playing tennis at Hope College. During his senior year, he played 1 singles and 1 doubles at Hope. Coach Vanderstoep is a three time MIAA All Conference Team member, two time MIAA player of the week, and one time Central Region player of the week. He was the 2016 Western Michigan qualifier sportsmanship winner and a Western Michigan team cup representative. His best career win is beating Western Michigan University’s #1 doubles team, who at the time were the #46th nationally ranked division 1 doubles team. Coach VanderStoep brings a great deal of knowledge and high level playing experience to our program. I couldn't be more excited to have him working with our players. I know they are going to be excited to work with him and I am happy to have him as my assistant going forward. It's going to be a lot of fun this fall! -Coach Metz The Sentinel All-Area team was published this morning. I've been looking forward to seeing seeing this article since the season ended. I am very pleased to see that 3 flights were selected first team all-area and 5 flights were selected second team all-area.
2, 3, and 4 doubles were selected as First Team All-Area. 1, 2, 3, 4 singles and 1 doubles were selected as Second Team All-Area. Online links: Holland Sentinel Article Meet the Panthers 2018 Boys, you should be incredibly proud of this. I have already updated the 2018 "Meet the Players" page to reflect these accomplishments. I know you are all already working very hard to improve during the off-season. Continue to work the way you are and we will have another very successful season next year. Keep it up. -Coach Metz Boys,
Thank you for an unforgettable first season as a varsity coach. It is one I won't soon forget. I wouldn't trade the last 3 months for anything. You are all truly special young men and I appreciate each one of you. Thank you for being my first team. Love you guys. -Coach Metz I am happy to announce that Pat Hamilton is going to be our Boy's JV Coach this fall. I am extremely excited to have Pat join our staff and wanted to let him introduce himself. I'm looking forward to the start of the boys season very much and can't wait to see both our JV and Varsity in action!
-Coach Metz Hi Players and Parents, My name is Pat Hamilton, and I am excited to be a part of the West Ottawa coaching staff for the Men’s Junior Varsity Tennis Team. I’m confident we will have a great season together, and I am looking forward to helping all players develop their skills to the best of their abilities. A bit about myself: I’m a Holland native and a West Ottawa grad. My tennis experience includes having played Varsity Doubles my Freshman year, and Singles my Sophomore through Senior year. I was a student at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Florida my Junior and Senior years. As a team, we qualified for State my Senior year...what an awesome experience! After high school, I attended Ferris State University’s Professional Tennis Management Program, during which time I also taught tennis lessons to high schoolers. While life led me down a different career path, and I graduated from Davenport University with a Business Management degree, I have always had a desire to tap back into my love of tennis. This opportunity will allow me to do that, and I’m very excited. My wife Lisa and I have been married for 19 years, and we have 2 daughters, Adria & Eden. Adria will be a Sophomore at WO, and also played on the Women’s Varsity Tennis Team last year. Eden will be a 6th Grader at Mac Bay this year, and is working hard at developing her tennis game. I look forward to meeting everyone soon. We will work hard, have fun, and hopefully celebrate many successes along the way! Best Regards, Coach Hamilton The Sentinel all-area team for tennis was announced today. This is the first time ever (for boys or girls) that all 8 flights were nominated as 1st team. On top of that, Chloe Karp was named Sentinel Player of the Year for the 3rd consecutive year. I'll update the website soon to reflect your new awards.
Both write-ups are excellent, so you'll probably want to pick up a hard copy to save. Also, thank Dan D'Adonna for the nice write-up if you see him around town. Here are the online links: All-Area Article Player of the Year Article Also, it's my understanding that almost all of you have been at either MVP or Dewitt so far, and that those of you on vacation will be there very soon. Just want you to know that I really do appreciate that. I'm beyond excited to see what the best team we've ever had can do with 12 more months of hard work. Keep it up, and I'll see you on the courts! -Coach Schwallier Hey West Ottawa,
We have good news! Starting with the boys this Fall and the girls next spring, the OK-Red will have 4 singles and 5 doubles flights that will count for scoring. The Red coaches (WO included) have encouraged the AD's to agree to this, and yesterday it was decided on! This means that:
Boys, contact Coach Brian Metz at [email protected] with questions. Girls, contact Coach Pete Schwallier at [email protected] with questions. We'll see you on the courts this summer! - Coach Metz and Coach Schwallier |
