**Comments-Wow did this season go fast!
It just seemed like yesterday we were practicing upstairs for the very first time w/me getting to know a lot of new faces and new names for a totally new season making sure all the basics were in place-all your names, phone numbers,e mail addresses, and making sure all you kids had your physicals taken and all your insurance money collected before all of you were technically "good to go" before our very first match.I can remember you kids hating to practice upstairs and all so eager to play outside despite how cold it was and even more eager to play outside if there was a slight drizzle. That's the excitement I love to see.Wow!You kids did whatever it took to play outside despite it being 35-40 degrees.I remember the stocking caps and most of you all bundled except a few diehards that toughed it out "flexing their muscles" "showin em how the big boys do it".I remember frantically spending several hours each night shoveling and scraping snow and ice slowly but surely.I remember that the snow didn't completely disappear until after I got back from Spring Break.I remember the weekend 19 of you kids showed up on a WEEKEND just to do match play so I could start getting my lineup figured out.I guess me bribing you guys with pizza reeled some or most of you in as an incentive to come out? As the season progressed I saw a lot of great things being your coach-I saw a lot of kids getting BETTER at tennis and MORE kids BETTER than I thought they'd be by seasons END.My lineup changed a LOT over the course of 12 matches and it was because of all you kids working extremely hard to get better and CHALLENGING yourselves to BEAT people BETTER than you to move UP in the LINEUP I called out.As a result of this ATTITUDE of all of you,we went UNDEFEATED for 12 Matches as a TEAM.That is absolutely INCREDIBLE!! Yes,we lost a few matches here and there, but as a TEAM we went out as WINNERS!!
Thanks for ALL of you kids for coming out to play tennis this year!! It was a JOY and PLEASURE for me to coach ALL of you!! You were all VERY COACHABLE and hopefully you will CONTINUE to play TENNIS down the road whether it's just for FUN with a friend or friends OR if you choose to get BETTER and COMPETE at a HIGHER LEVEL either in 8th grade for you now 7th graders and 9th grade for you now 8th graders! My last things to say are this-"When you think about how TENNIS went for you this year,Hopefully you had FUN playing it,Hopefully you felt you got BETTER and IMPROVED a LOT,and Hopefully you KNOW that TENNIS is there for you as an 8th grader all the way up to being a senior at West Ottawa and way past that! Tennis is a sport you can play into your 70s and 80s if you stay healthy.i played in an adult league w/a guy 80 years old and he still had some game! Unreal!I've seen it happen!I really encourage you to take advantage of the great weather and many outdoor courts nearby and simply PLAY w/a friend to play singles or 3 other people so you can play doubles. It's also a lot of fun to play w/FAMILY. Challenge your dad or mom or a brother or sister whether you enjoy playing singles or doubles.Trust me,it's a lot of fun, great exercise, doesn't cost you anything but your time to simply bike over or drive down to a local tennis court. And if you want to play at NIGHT under the lights,go to Zeeland Creekside Middle School OR the Ottawa County Fairgrounds. Also there are Camps out there if you want to get better at tennis if you want to go that route-WO Tennis Academy w/Coach Pete,MVP Tennis Camp@MVP in Holland,Dewitt Center at Hope College, and you can also get into tournaments thru the USTA tournaments(just google it and you can get in match play tournaments no matter what your age is or skill level is and guaranteed to play at least 2 matches win or lose which is really cool!) Play against BETTER PEOPLE to get BETTER.You might not win right away but keep looking at little victories to get to their level-first win a point, then a game, then multiple games in a set, then an actual set,and then actually WINNING a match altogether. It takes time, patience, and an attitude of hard work and all out effort of wanting to improve more and more.If you do those things, you're gonna GET THERE!    Coach Dykens

Comments from Coach Schwallier:  Boys, these scores that Coach Dykens and Coach Curtin keep sending me are amazing.  I've never seen anything like this from our middle schools, which is saying a lot, because we were good before.  WOcademy is starting soon, please consider signing up.  My goal is that when this 7th and 8th grade class moves into high school the next two years, a few of you can move straight to varsity each year as Freshman.  I believe that this is a realistic goal, but keep improving.  We take overnight trips to the Ann Arbor and Traverse City Area at the beginning of the year, and there are sweet schools there.  If you make varsity this fall, I want to make sure you are ready for them.  Keep working hard to improve more.

HEYHOO!!!! Nice Net Play Guys!!! I saw some wonderful points (WON) at the net!!! Remind yourself “Every Ball is Coming to ME!”  So keep your racket up and MOVE those Feet!!!  I think MANY of you are realizing this as you ALL have improved so much! AWSOME!  Oh and TERRIFIC Job today running down every ball – this is SO important as you are showing your appoint they had better hit a good shot because I’m getting every ball. Secondly, as quick as you all are you get to it and make them play one more ball!:)
Singles guys – Travis tough match but you knew that coming in to today’s match. Their coach named him “The Wall” and you certainly know why. I know how frustrating “Walls” can be but you truly played well and improved from the last match with him. Keep up the good work!
Domonic I was sorry you didn't get to play your re-match today but you sure did PLAY today!  I saw your last appoint looking over at your court - I’m sure he was thinking... Glad Donomic didn’t play this well when I played him! Great Job! 

Notes from Coach Schwallier - Sam, your loss may be the most impressive score on this list.  Currently, Ryan Rhodes is the best middle school player in the area (a distinction he deserves because he has earned it through years of very hard work).  However, as a competitive person, I want West Ottawa to possess the area's best Middle Schooler!!!  Ryan is a stingy player who never lets up or gives people free points.  If you got 4 games, you must have earned them, and are obviously closing the gap.  Thank you and keep working hard.
