Turkey Tournament

The Turkey Tournament is a Level 5. This should mean two important things to all of you:

1. It's worth a lot more points than your usual tournament. If you are a person looking to get a seed eventually in USTA events, doing well in tournaments that earn you more points is a great way to do it.

2. If you are entered in singles, DOUBLES CAN BE ENTERED FOR $3. So, if you are playing singles next weekend, play doubles as well, it's basically free!!!

USTA Tournament: MAC Challenger

Players,

Thanks once again for so many players competing. I love to see all the West Ottawa players in the draw. Special congrats to Joe Miller for winning the back draw of the Boys 16's. He had to win 3 consecutive matches to do it, winning two of them in three sets. Also, kudos to Alex Dougherty and Spencer Panse. Normally, when players first compete in USTA's, it's takes a while to get wins (most players in the tournaments are singles players for varsity teams). It was cool to see them able to get wins so soon. Definitely a good sign for them, and all of the WO kids entering.

Keep it up everyone. The next tournament on the schedule is the Turkey Tournament. This the the USTA of all USTA's. There will likely be several hundred players in the draws, and it is so big it's played at 5 tennis clubs. If you like things that are fun, consider playing:)

Holland Sentinel All-Area Selections are Published

Boys,

The All-Area team for tennis was named today in the Holland Sentinel. Of the 12 players selected, a record high 9 were from West Ottawa! Unlike All-Conference, which is chosen by the coaches, the All-Area team is selected by members of the press. The schools they consider are West Ottawa, Holland, Zeeland East, Zeeland East, Hamilton, and Holland Christian. They choose by flight. For example, they felt that Harsh Seghal and Nick Valentine were the best 3rd doubles team this Fall, so they earned All-Area. The next best 3rd doubles team gets named Honorable Mention.

The following were named to the 2012 All-Area Team:

Nick Schobel
Mark VanderStoep
Greg Christie
Joe Miller
Harsh Seghal
Nick Valentine
Andy Radke
Nick Govert
Kyle Harper (Honorable Mention)

There's a very nice article in the Sentinel today(Thursday) on all the boys, so make sure to buy one. Pam got mine for me while grocery shopping...woohoo!!!

Plaque Presentation

Attention Varsity Boys and Girls Athletes:

You will be be recognized on December 21 at halftime of the girls basketball game for the great season you all had last year. Usually what happens is they will call us down to the floor at halftime, read off all of our accomplishments, give us each a cool plaque, and people will clap and say nice things to you all night. All varsity players are expected to attend. Here's the details:

Where: Girls Varsity Basketball Game.
When: Tuesday, December 21 at halftime.
What to wear: Something nice.
Who should come: All Varsity Boys/Girls and any parents who wish to attend.

Here's your homework:
1. Leave a comment on this blog so I know you got the message.
2. In your comment, say whether you'd like to have dinner together at a restaurant beforehand, or whether you'd rather just meet at the game.
3. Tell other varsity boys and girls to leave a comment here in case they missed this. (In one week I expect this blog to be littered with comments!!!)

2012 West Michigan Final Rankings Released

CLICK HERE to see the rankings. Here are some cool things I noticed: 1. This is the 2nd year in a row the Grand Rapids Press has ranked West Ottawa in the top 3 and ahead of East Grand Rapids.
2. Three of the top six teams in West Michigan are in the OK-Red. It shows how impressive our streak of Conference titles is.
3. We play most teams on the list.
Overall I think they actually did a very accurate job ranking each team.
