Frequently asked questions about the draw that I get from parents and players:
Question:  Is the school I have to play good?
Answer: Yes, they are at the state finals.  And by the way, so are you.

Question: How do we get to the 2nd day of States?
Answer: For any player with a first round bye (most of you) you have to win 2 matches on Friday.  For players who play a first round match, you must win 3 matches.  If any flight does this, the whole team gets to spend a 2nd night at a hotel and root the girls on as they compete Saturday for a State Title.  Two of the 15 prior teams I've taken to the State Finals have made it to the 2nd day...it's tough!!!

Question: How many points do we get for a win?
Answer: It's similar to regionals.  If you have a bye your first round is worth two points, and one point for every win thereafter.  If you don't have a bye, then every win is worth a point.  If you win a state title at your flight, you'd earn 5 points for the team.

Question: What would be a good result for us?
Answer: A good result is that every player on the team leaves feeling like they played to their ability.  If you think of a good result in terms of a number of points or a place that we take, then you are thinking about it incorrectly.

Question: Yeah, yeah, but what would it take for us to get a top ten finish let's say?
Answer: Last year, the team that took 10th finished with 8 points.  So, probably right around 8 points:)  My old rule of thumb was that 10 points gets you 10th place, but on years when fewer teams qualify, there are fewer points.  This year only 17 teams qualified, so I think 8 is about right.

Alumni Match...Let's Do This!!!!!!

5/23/2016

Calling all former women's players!!

Next week Wednesday, June 1, we will have an Alumni Scrimmage/Party at the South Tennis Courts from 3:00-5:00pm.  This will be the Senior's last experience on the West Ottawa Courts, and I think this will be the most enjoyable way to cap off our season before we head to Midland the next day.  Here's what you need to do if interested....

1.  Leave a comment that you are attending, and
2.  Call your old teammates to get them to come too.

We have 9 days to make this happen, let's work together!!!

West Ottawa 7, Grand Haven 1

Wow, today went very well.  A 7-1 win over Grand Haven is a strong result.  Grand Haven is a good team.  We are now done with the OK-Red duels.  The duels count as 50% of the standings.   The other 50% comes from our performance at the Conference Tournament this Saturday.  Here's the standings leading into Saturday:

OK-Red
1.  Rockford
2.  West Ottawa
3.  Hudsonville
4.  Grand Haven
5.  Grandville
6.  East Kentwood

Senior Parents, thanks for helping put together a very nice moment for all of the Seniors.  Those girls have done a lot for the program and put in a lot of work, it was nice to be able to recognize them.

Also, I want to quickly give shout outs to a few of our players.  There's a list of things that I recognize on the Meet the Players page of the website.  They are things that I think are special accomplishments and that put us on a track towards reaching our team goals each year.  Anyway, some of our girls accomplished one of those milestones recently.

The following girls went undefeated through the OK-Red duels with their win today:
  • Alex Coy at 4th Singles
  • Rachel Rutgers and Jolene Soriano at 2nd Doubles
  • Madison Mitchell and Kacey Westenbroek at 4th Doubles

Also, our Varsity Alternates won their flight at the OK-Red JV Conference Tournament on Saturday:
  • Madison Wollenzier was the flight champion at 1st Singles
  • Morgan Goddard was the flight champion at 2nd Singles
The OK-Red JV team averages 30 players.  With 6 teams in the Red, that makes about 180 players.  With their tournament wins on Saturday, Madison and Morgan can legitimately say that they are the best two players in the OK-Red out of those 180.  This is a positive sign for our future.

Finally, a special shout out to all the alumni who came out today to support the team.  I love it when former parents and players get out and support.  Ok, that's all I've got for today, thanks for another great day at the courts.

Junior Varsity wins Invitational

Today, the Junior Varsity Women won the Panther Invitational.  Here's the details that I have so far...
  • Every school in the OK-Red, plus Holland and Jenison were invited.
  • Each school was asked to bring their 14 best Junior Varsity Players.
  • The tournament featured 2 singles flights and 6 doubles flights.
  • Two win your flight, you must win all three of your matches.
  • Teams invited: All OK-Red schools plus Holland and Jenison.  The winner of this tournament can claim to be the best Junior Varsity team in the OK-Red.
  • WE WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, here's the results:

Flight Champions:
1 singles Madison Wollenzier
2 singles Morgan Goddard
1 doubles Caroline Sisson and Megan Zimmer
3 doubles  Danielle Scholten and Taylor DeRidder
4 doubles  Isabelle McConkey and Anna Saewart

Runner Up
:
Cella Vanheest and Piper Kramer  (side note, Cella popped her shoulder out when they were up 6-3, she popped it back in and continued playing.  If this happened to me I would still be in the hospital crying like a baby)

2 Doubles;  Elizabeth Inthasane and Emily Grant won 2 matches
6 Doubles:  Megan McCormick and Julia Goede won 1 match

Others to participate:
Avery and Anna Warsaw won 2 matches at 6 doubles
Innes and Andrea won 1 match (against Rockford)
Wendy played with a Jenison girl and won 1 match
Serena and Amanda won 2 matches

Thanks girls for doing such a great job today and for working so hard.  It's very encouraging for me to see the success that you are all having.  You are a talented group.  -Coach Schwallier

Excellent match today girls.  Everyone did a good job handling a lot of wind, and I thought you were very smart overall.  The most notable match today was definitely Chloe Karp's win over senior Quincey Glupker.  Quincey is a terrific player who I have a lot of respect for.  This is a strong sign for Chloe as she continues to progress through her freshman year.  A reminder to anyone checking in that we will be home on Monday for their final OK-Red duel of the season against Grand Haven.  A win will put them in second place in the Red going into the conference tournament next Saturday.  Anyone who has an hour to spare should stop by and check the team out.  We play at the South courts off 152nd, and the match will start at 4pm.  I think you will be very impressed with the product we are putting on the court right now, these girls are ready to go every single day.  Thanks again girls for another strong performance.

Girls, you are in the middle of a very strong season.  I just wanted to publicly recognize how hard you are working and the success you are having.  Isabelle took some photos recently and sent them my way.  Here's some shots of you all in action:
