State Finals Updates

5/25/2013

Players/Parents,
The State Finals experience begins soon, and it's going to be incredible.  Thank you for all the work it took to get there.  So, let's get prepared:

Finanaces - let's get the money talk out of the way first...
State T-shirts - Girls should bring $18 to give to the VandePoel's before we leave for the tournament.  If a check is made out, write it to Superior Sports.  (Thank you VandePoel's for doing all this, you did a great job as always)

Food Money - I was informed this morning that West Ottawa has made the decision that money for food will no longer be provided for the team.  I am sorry to have been told this, and I am sorry that it was communicated to me the day before departure, and only because I inquired.  This is in no way Mr. Marsman's fault.  Please believe me that our athletic office is bending over backwards to support the team on this.  My guess is that $35 will be needed if we don't make it a 2nd day, and about $50 will be needed if we do make it to the 2nd day.

Parent's Dinner Thursday Night - Holiday Inn Sports Bar in Midland at 7PM.  The Hosner's and the Keech's have already made reservations.  If you are in town, join them for some fun and enjoy each other's company.

Banquet Information...this is important so I'm sneaking it in:

1.  The Draw.  CLICK HERE for the Divsion 1 State Finals draw.  However, make sure you don't get too caught up in it.  Time spent thinking about WHO you play is time you are not thinking about HOW you are going to play.  Put your focus in the right place.

2.  The Itinerary.

Thursday
10:00am  Players are excused from class
10:15am  Players are expected to be at the Athletic Office.  Parents are welcome to come and

               see them off.
10:30am  Depart for Midland
Noon       We will stop for lunch.
1:30pm   We will practice at the Midland Tennis Center.  CLICK HERE for tennis center info.
3:00pm   Check in at the Hampton Inn.  CLICK HERE for hotel info.
5:30pm   Hang out at the Mall/Dinner - Buffalo Wild Wings seems to be what the girls want at

              this point.

*After the meeting we'll head to our rooms for some rest. (Got that girls!?!?!)

Friday
6:00am Breakfast

7:00am Arrive at Midland Tennis Center (warm-up)
7:45am Coaches Meeting
8:00am Players Meeting
8:15am Play begins
*We play till we are all done.  If anyone advances to the Semi-Finals, we all stay a 2nd day.  In this case we return home on Saturday afternoon.  If we are all done on Friday night, we will get home very late on Friday, even as late as midnight possibly.

Team Goals
1.  Don't do anything stupid.
2.  Perform to your ability.
3.  Have fun.
4.  Players, some time over the weekend, thank your parents for all they do.  If there is a particular instructor(s) who have helped you over the past year, this is a weekend to send them a call or text.  They spent a lot of time and energy so you can have experiences like this.  Weekends like this are great times to acknowledge the people who have helped you.
5.  And seriously, don't do anything stupid this weekend.

Parents
Those of you who have been to this event know that we will consume a lot of food throughout the tournament.  If you are going, leave a comment below about what you are going to bring.  And a reminder that parents are meeting at the Holiday in Sports Bar at 7PM on Thursday night!  And if any parents are on the fence about whether you should make the trip, the answer is YES!  If you like things that awesome, you will like this:)

Make it a great week!

...for bringing over the refreshments at practice today.  With the heat we had, I'd say it was a good day for it!  But obviously, more than that, thanks for all you do for the program every day.  It took a lot of people in the community working together to win the Regional again, and this fact is not lost on me or the team.  Thanks for all you do.

West Ottawa Girls Win Back-to-Back Division 1 Regional Titles

5/17/2013

It's pretty amazing what you all did yesterday.  The official results haven't been published because there is still a 2 singles match that likely finished an hour or two ago.  However, you can Click Here for the results that I did receive today.  I added up the points for all the teams today and included them at the end of the document.  I may have counted some of it wrong because I went fast, but it's probably pretty close until the final results come in.  Obviously either Grandville or EK will get an extra point depending on how the 2 singles match ends.

Players: Thanks again for your amazing play.  You definitely had more fun than every team there, and it paid off in the points.  It sure was fun to see the hard work pay off.

Parents: You all know how much I appreciate you as well.  The support you give the girls and the program is awesome.

Coach Matt: Thank you so much for choosing to coach here at West Ottawa.  We don't get to 22 points with out you and what your whole staff at MVP do for us.  At least 2/3 of the team is training with you guys throughout the year, and good things are happening.  It's fun to work together with people to make good things happen.

Ok, I'll post more later, but this is a good start.  Time to enjoy a Tennis Free Friday evening:)

Tomorrow is the day, let's make it a FUN one!

Important Times:
Arrive at Great American Bagel: 7:10
Leave Great American Bagel: 7:30
Arrive at Holland High: 7:45
Official On-Court Warmup Time for WO: 8:00-8:20
Coaches Meeting: 8:30
Players Meeting: 8:45
Play Begins: 9:00
Kicking Butt: All day long

Sites:
Holland High School: All the 1's and 2's for singles and doubles
Holland Christian High School: All the 3's and 4's

Parents: As always, bring plenty to eat and drink, be up beat, and get ready to root for WO. Black and White gear is encouraged but not mandatory:)

Participating Schools: West Ottawa, Hudsonville, Grandville, Grand Haven, East Kentwood, Rockford, Holland, Caledonia, Kalamazoo Central, Jenison, Battle Creek Central, Wyoming

Tournament Format: Single Elimination.  If you have a bye, your first round is worth two points, and one point for every win thereafter.  If you are unseeded and win your first match, you earn one point for that match, plus an additional point for every win thereafter.  Taking 1st or 2nd or getting a total of 18 points qualifies us for the State Finals.  I've found that in general, the best strategy is to try to get as many points as possible.

OK-Red Tournament Update

5/11/2013

Parents/Players,

Many of you were present in the Keech's RV to hear about the new plan, but here's where things stand:

- The tournament will conclude on Monday
- Players are dismissed from class @ 1:00 PM
- They will meet at the athletic office ASAP after school.
- We will depart for Grand Haven at 1:10 from the athletic office.
- 3/4 Doubles will report directly to White Pines, All other flights to the High School.
- All final matches will be played at the High School for 1st-4th place.
- All 5th/6th place matches will occur at White Pines Middle School.

Remember that Tuesday we play Holland High, who is a good team in our region.  Their coach has done a great job preparing the girls, and they are improved from the beginning of the season.  Be ready for them and do not take them lightly, regardless of the score the 1st time you played them.

It's getting towards the end of the season.  Stay focused for a few more days, and we can have a lot of fun ahead in the coming weeks!!!

Parents/Players,

THE DRAW IS NOW UP!  CLICK HERE TO SEE WHO WE PLAY!

IF IT RAINS, we will all still meet at Great American Bagel and then head to Grand Haven.  All teams have been told to meet at GH regardless of the weather.  If it is raining, we will meet in the cafeteria.  The plan would be to wait out rain and get in as much tennis as possible.  The current forecast is for only a 30% chance of showers at 1pm tomorrow, but it's Michigan, so forecasts can change.

IF THE EVENT RAINS OUT, the players will be excused from school on Monday to play the tournament.  I am meeting with Ms. Wade today to get a details on the make-up date for any AP test that may conflict.  I'm not sure if we have any players testing on Monday, but I'll have details for you in case.

Important Times:
6:40am - Meet at Great American Bagel for Breakfast (This is a recent revision)
7:30am - Arrive at Grand Haven
7:45am - Coaches Meeting
8:00am - Players Meeting
8:15am - Play Begins

Host School:  Grand Haven
Sites: GH High School - All Singles, plus 1 and 2 doubles
White Pines Middle School - 3 and 4 doubles
*All 5th/6th place matches for the 3rd round will be played at WP Middle School
*All 1st-4th place matches for the 3rd round will be played at GH High School

Directions to White Pines Middle School from GH High School (3.7 Miles)
           1.  Go North on US-31
           2.  Right on Robbins Road
           3.  Take 3rd Left onto Griffin Street  (the courts are behind the school)

Regular Season Standings:
1.  Hudsonville 5-0
2.  West Ottawa 4-1
t3.  Grandville 1-2-2
t3.  East Kentwood 1-2-2
5.  Rockford 0-2-3
6.  Grand Haven 0-4-1
*Note that Grand Haven is in last place.  However, we played Grand Haven, and I hope that everyone remembers that Grand Haven is a GOOD TEAM.  Just because you beat a team before, it doesn't mean they are easy and will just let us beat them the next time.  You better fight for every match you play.  We are entitled to nothing.

Tournament Format: Pool Play.  All players will be placed in their flight 1st-6th.  Pool A will consist of the 1,4, and 5 seeds.  Pool B will consist of the 2,3, and 6 seeds.  The winners of each pool will play for 1st/2nd place, the runner up in each pool will play for 3rd/4th place, and the loser of each pool will play for 5th/6th place.  SAMPLE DRAW SHEET

What we need to do.  Beat a lot of people all day long.  We are in 2nd place.  To win the OK-Red, we need to win the tournament.  If we do that, we are the OK-Red Champs.  Just as importantly, your performance at the tournament is a large factor for Regional Seeding, which helps us advance to the State Finals.

Schedule for this week:
Tuesday - Practice
Wednesday - Practice
Thursday - No Practice for Tulip Time (I'll attend the seed meeting in GH that evening)
Friday - Practice (I'll have draws printed out for each girl)

Needs for the tournament:
1. Snacks - We have a list, but hopefully other parents will bring stuff even if their name isn't on there.  This tournament will go from morning to dinner time and the girls will need energy.
2.  Tent - Does anyone have a tent to set up to give the girls some shade.  If we have one for each site, that would be amazing, but especially for the High School.  There's less shade at the high school, and we will need a home base to put lots of stuff.

Leave a comment below if you have a question/suggestion.  There's a lot to keep track of, so tell me if there's other information you want posted.  Players, parents, and coaches have put in a great investment over the last year so the next few weeks will go well.  Let's work together to make sure it pays off.

And finally, thanks for the continued support you give me all year long, and particularly at this time of the year.  I was standing on the bleachers with my father last night watching Colleen play Hudsonville, and we talked briefly about how fortunate I am to be here at West Ottawa.  Life's about doing memorable things with people you care about, and I'm glad to be doing that with all of you.

Make it a good week,

-Coach Schwallier

EGR Invitational Results

Good job yesterday girls!  We tied East Grand Rapids 4-4.  I checked the archives before the tournament yesterday, and we have never tied or beaten them before, so this was another first for the program.  We lost to HC 6-2, so kudos to the Maroons for getting us yesterday I suppose.

Several individuals have been working on particular things, and it was fun to see them happen in actual matches.  Kennidi and Colleen, you have been working on adding more power into your shots, and I saw that throughout the day.  Colleen, in addition to that, you had to battle through some things in your first match, and I was impressed how well you did that.  Third and Fourth doubles, you made some adjustments as the day went on that I thought will help you a lot going forward this season.  With Hudsonville on Monday, you picked a good time to do it:)  And everyone else, I saw more of the same great effort and intensity that I've seen all year.  You are getting better and better all the time.

Parents, I have a request: The food provided for us by the parents at EGR yesterday was way above and beyond what any other school has ever done for us.  For those who weren't there, they provided a full spread of food and drinks for every player, parent, and coach for all teams.  If you feel inclined, shoot an email to EGR's Athletic director.  I bet their program would like it if their AD got a bunch of nice comments to start their week.  I went on their website and his name is Tim Johnston, and his email is [email protected].  I will send my email to him as soon as I post this.

I hope to see many of you tonight at the Keech's!

EGR Invite and many other things...

Parents/Players,

Here's some info to keep us all on the same page:

EGR Invitational:
Show up at Transportation: 7:00am
Arrive at EGR: 8:00am or a little before
Play Begins: 8:30am
Competing Teams: EGR, Holland Christian, and West Ottawa.  So, each girl will play two matches on Saturday, and have a round where they sit out, while the other two teams play each other.  I expect to be home mid-afternoon assuming good weather.

Varsity Pasta Party: Sunday evening at the Keech's at 5:00pm.  Bring a swimsuit if you want to go in the hot tub.  Landon told me he wants to go, but may be napping, so we will see.

Year-End Banquet:
Tuesday, June 4
6:30 PM
HS South Cafeteria

More details about who will bring what will come, but I want everyone to at least have the date marked on the calendar.

In other action, our JV team will be competing in a TWO tournaments this weekend.  Some of our girls will be at the Holland Invitational, which is actually a varsity tournament.  This will be a great opportunity to see how they can perform against varsity teams.  The most important team to use as a barometer is Grand Haven, because they are a varsity team that we will definitely need to beat next Spring.  Our Coaching staff for this event is Coach VandePoel and Coach Rutgers.  Both are excellent, so you are in good hands!  If there's anyone else helping out who I am not aware of, I want to say thanks to you as well.

Other JV girls will be going to the NorthPointe Christian Invitational.  This will be a great experience as well, as it will give many girls an opportunity to play 3 matches against other schools.

Coach Gahan and I will try to get results posted online as soon as we can so everyone can see the results from all the competitions.

Good luck everyone!

Coach Schwallier
