Booster Public Service Announcement

4/30/2013

Hello Parents,  I was asked by the boosters in an email to post this, so here you go:

Reps - please make sure this note gets to ALL parents - 9th grade thru 12th grade.

Attention all parents of athletes.  We are having a very difficult time filling the concession stands this spring.

I know we are all busy; the concessions (run by the WO Athletic Boosters) bring in money that goes straight to all West Ottawa teams.  Teams are able to purchase uniforms and training equipment with money from concession sales.

If a concession assignment is not filled, the team will lose 20% their  allowed Boosters money;  if the team already spent their money for the 2012-2013 year, the deduction will go towards next year.

It is important to offer food and drinks for the athletes and visitors.

Team Pictures and EK/FHN Makeup

4/22/2013

Parents/Players,

Team Pictures
Both teams have uniforms in, so we can finally get our team picture taken.  All girls have been given envelopes to take home after practice today, so make sure to bring them tomorrow for our picture.  If the weather is nice, our pictures will be outside.  If it rains, then our pictures will be in the North Auxillary Gym at 4:00PM.  Girls, make sure to bring your uniforms!

EK Makeup will be this Thursday, April 25.  Varsity will be Away, JV will be at Home.
FHN Makeup will be Monday, April 29 at FHN.  This will only apply to varsity.

Needs: I need drivers for EK and FHN, so if you can drive, let me know soon please.  Thanks

Grandville Recap: The Varsity and JV both won, and did a very good job.  The Varsity won 6-2.  Grandville generally puts a nice team together, so this is a good sign for us.  We will need to continue to improve though when we play Grand Haven on Wednesday.  But I would always say that as a season progresses, so that's not a bad thing.  I just want to make sure everyone understands the need to keep working on their games.

Have a good night,

Coach Schwallier

Okemos Tournament Cancelled

Parent/Players,
Myself and several other coaches felt that the cold weather mixed with the wind would create conditions what would be unhealthy for all the girls tomorrow.  The tournament is cancelled, so let's just spend some time in Holland this weekend!  I hope you enjoy yourselves at Prom tonight, but safe.  There are lot of people who care very much about you who want you to be safe/careful at the dance, on the roads, and everywhere you go.  Have a good night.

Okemos Tournament Information

Parents/Players,

It looks like this thing is going to actually happen tomorrow.  It's going to be a cool day, but rain is not a large part of the forecast.  Because this is the morning after the Prom, it will be an out of the ordinary day...so, let's all make sure we are extra prepared!!!  Here we go:

Tournament Information:
Saturday, April 20th, 2013

***Leave from Transportation:  6:20 AM***

Place:                           Okemos High School (12cts) and Chippewa M.S. (10cts) (They are a mile apart)

Sites:                            1 and 2 singles and  1, 2 and 3 doubles OHS
3 and 4 singles and 4 doubles at CMS

Players Meeting:         8:30 AM – Meet at Okemos High School Courts

Starting Time:              9:00 A.M.

Awards:                       Trophy: 1st and 2nd place teams;  Medals: 1st, 2nd and backdraw winner.

Invited Schools:          East Lansing, Rockford,Cranbrook Kingswood,St. Clair,Marian,Northville, Okemos, WO

Brackets:                     Mixed draw: Each flight to play 3 matches

Match Play:                 Each Match is the best two out of three sets. If spit sets; 3rd set will be a super tie break

Scoring:                       One point for each win.

Requests from Coach Schwallier:
Parents and Parents:
1.  Make sure players have their stuff 100% ready to go before they leave for prom.  Ideally, have  bag/shoes, etc in the vehicle they are going to drive to transportation in the morning.
2.  Make sure you are up and out the door on time.  We are going to leave from transportation as late as I feel we can afford so the girls get more sleep.  So, if anyone is late in the morning, it will hurt us more than normal.
3.  Make sure you have enough layers.  It's always colder than you think out there.  Several girls will already be tired from Friday night, let's try to avoid a slew of sick girls on Monday:)

Ok, this tournament was scheduled so we can begin to see how we stack up against the best teams on the East side of Michigan.  A good day by our girls could mean seeds for them at the State Tournament.  Let's have fun and kick some butt!!!!!  Then let's go home and get some rest:)

Mac Bay Boys Defeats Grand Haven 3-2

Flight Results:
1 Singles Travis Bethke   L  3-6   3-6
2 Singles Dominic Aquino W  6-2   6-1

1 Doubles Tyler Bosma/Chet Johnson W 6-2  6-4
2 Doubles Justin Anair/Matthew Moraw W 6-3  6-1
3 Doubles Justin Bowker/Tanner Drain  L 1-6 1-6
4 Doubles Kenny Sao-Monsaath/Sebastian Reinink played 3 sets with 3 different teams   0-6   5-6   3-4

Thoughts from Varsity Coach Schwallier:  I spoke to Coach Curtin, and she said that you all played fantastic.  Grand Haven's 1 singles player is one of the area's top ranked juniors, and Travis Bethke played him extremely close.  It will be exciting to see which players on our team will put in the work to catch up to this player in the coming years!  He works hard, so you will have to work harder:)  I was able to stop by your practice today, and I see a lot of potential in your group.  There are players who have very well developed strokes, and there are lots of athletes on the team.  Keep working on the first and second most important shots...and you all know what those are!!!

Oh, and I was also thinking that you guys have got a really good coach in Coach Curtin.  I expect that you are thanking her often for all she does!!!!!

Remarks from Coach Dykens:
I loved seeing the determination on how the kids battled today!  A few of the groups had to come from behind to win their matches.  Saw some great hustle plays.  Serving today was awesome.  We had very few double faults.  I really like seeing the enthusiasm and communication between the doubles teams.  It was also great to see so many parents come out on a cold April day to support their player and the team!!  We had a great opening match.  Very proud of the sportsmanship of our players!!  You represented WO athletics well!

Remarks from Varsity Coach Schwallier:
Numbers are way up from last year, and this is a great sign.  From remarks Coach Dykens and Coach Curtin have made, there's a lot of potential on both teams.  I'm getting the impression that several of you are playing in the off-season, and that's exactly what our program needs each year, so thank you.  Keep sending me scores and I will post them.  Also, send photos at [email protected], and I'll post them as well. The best advice I can give is to not think too much about where you play in the lineup or who you play with.  Concentrate on improvement.

Lowell Invitational and Friday Practice Cancelled

4/12/2013

Parents/Players,

1.  Lowell's AD just cancelled the tournament because the forecast looks so ugly tomorrow.  It does not look like the tournament will get rescheduled.
2.  Varsity practice today is cancelled at MVP due to an all-day tennis tournament being played there.  I sent a text to the girls this morning about both of these things, but I wanted to put it here too just in case.
3. The plan for Varsity on Monday: If good weather, practice outside.  If bad weather, practice at MVP.

Have a good weekend everyone!
